About Norton Creek Press
Norton Creek is a small publisher in rural Oregon, focusing on practical
books on poultry and livestock management. Norton Creek Press is run by me, Robert
Plamondon. I am an author and free-range poultry expert.
My first offering is my new book, Success With
Baby Chicks. I wrote this book when I realized that many people were having
heartbreaking problems trying to raise baby chicks; problems thatI had learned how
to deal with by trial and error and through extensive reading. The book has received
warm praise from farmers who tell me that it has made a big difference with their chick
rearing. Its average rating at Amazon.com is five stars!
I have also reissued three classic poultry books:
The Dollar Hen, Genetics of the Fowl, and Feeding Poultry. It is impossible
for me to praise these books too highly. The Dollar Hen had more influence on me than
any other poultry book. It set me on the path to successful and profitable free-range egg
farming. Genetics of the Fowl taught me a great deal about poultry breeding -- enough that
I am often mistaken for an expert. Feeding Poultry is the best book I've found on practical
poultry nutrition -- accessible enough to be read by the practical farmer, but detailed enough to
be used by professionals.
All these books recognize the value of folks with small operations; they were written before factory-farming
took hold.
I have read literally hundreds of poultry books, and these are among the very best. I hope to bring out a few
more over the next couple of years, but none will displace these three.
Old Books: New Relevance
The appeal of out-of-print classics is that today's small farmer has
more in common with the farmer of 50 or 100 years ago than he has
with today's large-scale farmers. The best farming, poultry, and
livestock books of yesteryear are still well-targeted to today's small
producer.
As an extra bonus, these books share a characteristic you can't find in newer books on rural topics -- they're
really about what they say they're about -- they don't rant and rave about politics or conspiracy theories at all!
I find this refreshing.
I'd like to thank everyone who has commented so favorably on my Web
site over the past few years, and also those who kept prodding me to
sit down and write a book about poultry. It never would have happened without
you!
