I wouldn’t add anything that costs actual money to deep litter unless it had an undeniable effect like hydrated lime does. Not unless there’s some pretty sturdy research in this specific context.

I’m not sure about your specific case, but it’s not “deep litter” until it’s a lot deeper than most people realize, and small chicken houses can’t handle that much.

But you can always use your nose as a guide. When it smells like ammonia inside the chicken house, it’s time to increase ventilation, remove at the least the wettest of the litter, or both.
